Everything went to the dogs … and puppies and kitties.
Kami Sherwood, 11, of Granger, has a soft spot for dogs. Her love extends to collecting pet food and donating it to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, Indiana State.
Mom Kim Sherwood said her daughter and a friend, Lindsey Schnable, decided to organize a garage sale last spring. After a quick turnaround, they raised $100.50 for the Humane Society.                                                                                        And the collecting continues. For her birthday on Dec. 14, she asked her friends to bring dog or cat food rather than gifts for the birthday girl. “We watched how contagious her big heart is” as each of her five friends brought over dog and cat food along with the gear for a sleepover, Kim said.
It amounted to about 70 pounds of food and three fleece dog blankets.
Kami attends Northpoint Elementary. About the same time as the birthday party, her principal,Chris Stephan, asked for donations to the Humane Society at the Christmas season. So the Sherwoods sent the pet food over for one big donation from the school. Stephan said the school collected 27 large bags of pet items, including food, treats, toys and blankets, as well as $386.15.
Kim and her husband, Matt, said Kami talks about being a veterinarian or a teacher. “Either one she would excel wonderfully,” mom said.
