The Hurt Locker brought Hollywood glamour to bomb aquad experts, but this stark image show the daily grind of these British heroes.
Hunting for improvised explosive devices in deadly Helmand Province in Afghanistan is painstaking and punishing work – but lives depend upon it.
Our picture show bomb disposal experts working to prevent more deaths.
"L/Cpl Matt Robeson, of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and Sapper Adam Lee, of 20 Field Squadron, 36 Engineer Regiment, are shown working with sniffer dog Molly to search an area in Gereshk in August. They come across an IED at the roadside, one of 14 in a 300 metre stretch. The men move in to carry out a controlled explosion.
Like the othres, Cpl Kevin Bain, of 20 Field Squardron, 36 Engineer Regiment is clad in body armour and heavy kit.
As a cloud of dust shoots into the air, he says: “You can only do this job so many times until your luck runs out.”
After a hard day’s work, Royal Engineer, Lieutenant Alex Findlay, proudly stands with Ammunition Technical Officer Jay Hobden, of 11 EOD, of the Royal Logistic Corps, in front of a message on the road to tell comrades it is clear. Job done.
